Xiaomi plans to launch Redmi Mi A2, Android One smartphone

Last year, Google and Xiaomi unveiled a new smartphone in India, Xiaomi Mi A1 as part of Google's Android One initiative.

Google's Android One initiative aims at providing low-budget smartphones running on the unmodified Android operating system with the latest Google technology. Android one provides a consistent user experience and improved security through frequent updates and Google Play Protect.

A1 is the first smartphone from Xiaomi based on Stock Android and one of the best selling smartphone in the Indian market.

Stock Android denotes the version of Android which is completely based on how Google envisioned Android to be. It does not include anything extra other than the core Android apps and UI. Over the long period, stock android performs much better than any other phone with external UI layer. Also, devices based on stock android get timely updates like Mi A1, which was Xiaomi's first device to get Android Oreo update.

Recently, Xiaomi's co-founder and CEO Lei Jun hinted at a possibility of a Redmi Android One device during the conversation with Media persons in Bengaluru. It is rumored to be named Mi A2, rebranded version of the Mi 6X smartphone that was launched in China on April 25^th.

Xiaomi took the top spot in smartphones sales in the final quarter of 2017 with its affordable Redmi series. Xiaomi clocked a 27.4% share of the market with 8.2 million phones, higher than Samsung's 24.6% share with over 7.3 million phones in the three month period.
