Facebook to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in retouching closed eyes in selfies

In a recently published Facebook research paper, Facebook mentioned using machine learning to retouch closed eyes when you accidentally blink your eyes while clicking a photo. This machine learning called "Generative Adversarial Network" is used to generate images using Artificial Intelligence such as superimposing famous celebrities, designing clothes to even changing the weather in videos.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a class of neural networks that are used in unsupervised machine learning. They help to solve tasks such as image generation from descriptions, getting high-resolution images from low-resolution ones, predicting which drug could treat a certain disease, retrieving images that contain a given pattern etc.

To edit or digitally open someone's eye, Artificial Intelligence uses "in-painting" i.e learns how a person's eyes look from an image where they are not blinking and gets an idea about their iris color, skin tone, eye contours.
The process becomes somewhat complicated when it comes to editing images where the person is wearing glasses or hair overshadowing their eyes. Also, it looks tricky to judge whether the person was looking at the camera or somewhere else.

Like Facebook, Adobe too uses AI to enhance low-resolution images, select and crop out objects in a photo.
